In late 2017, Lorde was nominated for Album of the Year for her sophomore studio album Melodrama. She was the only female in that category.
Controversy arose when it was revealed Lorde would not be performing at the Grammy Awards. This was later confirmed to be because Lorde was offered to sing "American Girl" by Tom Petty as a part of a tribute to the singer - but she declined. People were upset with this as she was the only female nominated for Album of the Year, yet she wasn't scheduled to perform.
